About The International Economics Olympiad (IEO)

The International Economics Olympiad (IEO) – Formerly known as European Economic Olympiad (EEO) – was organized by the International Olympic Academy and established in 2016 by the Institute of Economic Education (INEV). It quickly emerged as one of the Czech Republic’s most prestigious school competitions.
Expanding rapidly, it now engages about 97,000 students globally, transcending its national roots to embrace an international audience. Tailored for middle school students and high school students without restriction to the type of secondary education, the Economics Olympiad garners support both nationally and internationally from esteemed entities like the Ministries of Education, Greece Central Banks, Academic Institutions. The International Economics Olympiad has experienced remarkable growth since its inception, soaring from an initial 4,000 participants in 2017 to nearly 100,000 by 2024.

The IEO aims to fill the gap in teaching economics and finance at high schools, and strengthen the skills of adolescents in logical thinking, problem-solving and critical thinking, spark their interest and support them on their career path.

Awards:

• National Honor Award: National Top 10%
• High Distinction: National Top 20%
• Distinction: National Top 30%
• Outstanding Award: National Top 45%
Credit Award: Regional Top 20% (excluding national awards)
*National Honor Award, High Distinction, Distinction, Outstanding Award winners will be invited to participate in National Round.

• The top 5 students’ scores will be accumulated as the total score of the school. Schools with less than 5 participants will not be involved in the ranking.
• Gold: National Top 15%
• Silver: National Top 30%
• Bronze: National Top 45%

National Round

Date: TDB
Location: China
Format: Team sessions & Individual Sessions
Team Formation: Students from the same school can form teams of 3-5 members. For individual participants, the organizer will randomly assign them to teams.
SESSIONS:
1. Economic Challenge: 
Individual written test, 2 rounds (45 minutes each round), each round consists of 4 modules:
  • Economic Knowledge: multiple-choice questions
  • Diagram analysis: short-answer questions
  • Analytical essay: writing
  • Financial analysis and calculation
2. Oral Exam: Individual presentation. Each student is required to give a presentation for no more than 5 minutes in English. The judge may ask follow-up questions. Presentation topics will be assigned in advance.
3. Economic Quiz Bowl: Team*, multiple-choice and short-answer questions. Teams will race the clock to answer questions using a buzzer.
4. Model World Bank: Team*, role play, discuss and debate. Each team will represent one country and engage in discussion and negotiations over a series of pressing issues.

5. International Trade Challenge: Each team will represent one country and have own specialization. During this challenge, each team is required to form allies and maximize the countries’ diversification.

Format: Gold, Silver, Bronze winners will be invited to join the pre-selection round. 

Content: 5 MCQ + 2 Short Answer(90 mins)

Eligibility: Top 5% of Total National Point in National Round

Global Round

Date: August, 2025

Location: IOA, Greece

Format: Individual

Sessions: Economic Challenge and Oral Exam

Eligibility: Top 5 National Representative
