Introduction

You Be The Chemist Challenge (YBTC) is an international academic competition founded by the Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF) and supported by more than 100 global chemical companies. For over 36 years, YBTC has inspired young students to explore the wonders of chemistry through interactive, engaging, and hands-on learning experiences.

Unlike traditional contests that emphasize memorization, YBTC focuses on sparking curiosity and developing scientific thinking among students aged 10 to 14. With more than 60,000 participants every year, the challenge has become a cornerstone event that connects schools, educators, and industry leaders to nurture the next generation of scientists.

CEF was established in 1989 by the National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) to promote STEM education and build awareness of chemistry’s vital role in everyday life. Its programs are now supported by multinational companies and research institutions around the world.

Why Join YBTC?

Through YBTC, students:

  • Develop scientific curiosity and a foundational understanding of chemistry
  • Build critical thinking and teamwork skills
  • Connect with STEM leaders and global peers
  • Gain international recognition and strengthen academic profiles

According to CEF’s surveys, over 80% of participants reported better understanding of how chemistry shapes everyday life, and 86% said they felt more confident pursuing future studies in STEM.
